About
As the News of the World scandal rocked the world, a few of us started a conversation.
Click here to check out who's involved.
The revelations of unethical and illegal practices opened our eyes to the extent of the power and influence that individuals and companies can have over the news industry.
Out of that conversation, NewsStand was born.
After consulting a range of organisations like The Centre for Policy Development, The Australia Institute, Media Matters for America, the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, GetUp, Avaaz and a range of individuals from all walks of life, we hit the ground running with a petition encouraging the Government to establish a short, sharp public Inquiry. We reckon the Inquiry should look at how to promote higher standards, protect people’s privacy while guaranteeing the freedom of the press, stimulate a more diverse media marketplace, and ensure that problems and complaints can be handled simply, fairly and effectively.
We don’t claim to have all the answers (that’s where we are hoping you come in) but we do know that there is something wrong. A healthy democracy is one where we have a diversity of voices and that requires a fair and diverse media.
We have only a few staff, lots of volunteers, no office yet but loads of goodwill and support. Join with us today to help us transform the media.
